Comfort and versatility is what this bike is all about. This Motobecane mixte is a beautiful example of a well built workhorse with sensibility and class. The mixte – pronounced meext in French, but MIX-tee in English – is a step-through frame with a twist. The top tube is replaced by smaller-diameter twin stays that run from the top of the bike’s head tube down to its rear dropouts, bisecting the rear triangle. These uniquely beautiful and stable frames proliferated in Europe throughout the 20th century, with notable models produced by French manufacturers Rene Herse and Peugeot after WWII. The mixte frame design continued to be popular through the 80’s. This is a beautifully restored example of one of these very versatile bikes. This Motobecane mixte works well as a commuter, city bike, and as an exercise road bike. Just put a basket on the front or attach a rack and you have a great bike for running errands, riding to the brew pub, or logging miles on the bike path. If you’re looking for a classic vintage ride, you’re going to be hard pressed to find anything comparable to this gorgeous bike. Not only are lugged steel framed bikes beautiful compared to the ugly utilitarian welds on a modern aluminum framed bike. Steel also provides a much more supple ride. Road vibration is notably dampened compared to an aluminum frame bike. The Restoration Process This Papa Monkey restoration started by stripping the bike down to the frame. The frame was media blasted and professionally powder coated yielding a dark emerald green color with metal flakes. All of the components were meticulously cleaned and polished. The headset and bottom bracket were cleaned and the steel bearings in each were inspected and replaced if needed. Upon reassembly the bearings were greased. The Suntour Vx derailleurs, Weinmann brakes, and SR crankset are all original. The cockpit was rebuilt using a new Northroad trekking handlebar, and comfortable brown basketweave grips. The seat was also replaced with an extremely comfortable Selle Royal Onida saddle with gel cushioning. All of the consumables were replaced. This includes new tires and tubes, new cables and lined cable housing, new grips, new brake pads, new pedals, and a new chain. It’s only after this meticulous restoration that a bike can become a Monkey Machine! If you’re ready to ride a vintage steel steed, then ride with Papa Monkey. Own this beautiful bike for $350.
