1985 Ross Mt St Helen  |  $285

1985 Ross Mt St Helen - $285 Survive the zombie apocalypse or just ride to the local eatery for lunch! This bike is built like a tank! The lugged 4130 chromoly steel frame is built to take whatever you can throw at it. It’s also ruggedly handsome. Ross started manufacturing mountain bikes in the early 1980’s. They were an early leader and had one of the first mountain bike racing teams. The frames and the bikes were built in Allentown, Pennsylvania. This bike is a piece of vintage cool Americana! I tried to keep this bike as original as possible. Unfortunately when I bought the bike the bull moose handlebars were no longer on it. I believe that the wheelset is original, but the anodized blue rims had been painted black at some point. Even though it is lacking those two details it is still a good looking and very functional bike. The black SR crankset is nothing fancy, but it just looks cool! Since the St Helen was not a top tier bike in the Ross hierarchy, the derailleurs and shifters were nothing to write home about. I did make the decision to replace them with a nicer Suntour alpha 5000 group. The rear derailleur is now indexed. The restoration process. This bike was completely disassembled. The frame and fork were powder coated a deep blue. Bearings in the headset, the bottom bracket, and the hubs were replaced with new. The tires were replaced with Haro 26” x 2.1” tires with tan sidewalls and a tread pattern best suited for urban riding. All of the cables, the brake pads, and the chain were replaced with new. The stem was powder coated. The handlebars sport new shifters and grips. The seat and seatpost are original. A new front mini rack was added to the bike making it more functional. I was sure to replace the existing freewheel with a Suntour Alpha which is built for the Suntour Accushift shifters and indexed Alpha 5000 rear derailleur. The bike shifts great! Lastly, new bear trap pedals were installed. Contact me if you are interested in the bike and want to talk more about it. Papa Monkey loves breathing new life into vintage steel bikes.
